At night, in a previously unseen event, tiny organisms that light up when disturbed react to their wingbeats, creating an enchanting bioluminescent firework display. In spring thousands of mobula rays gather in Mexico's Sea of Cortez. In the tropics sun heats the sea, creating rain, winds and huge storms that drive up towards higher latitudes. Fledglings must eventually take to the wing, but danger lurks beneath the waves: metre-long giant trevally fish leap clear out of the water to snatch birds on the wing. ![]() In the Seychelles, half a million terns nest on an island. Starting in the tropical coral reefs - the most diverse ocean habitat - a tusk fish demonstrates a surprising level of ingenuity - tool use - as it uses corals as an anvil to break open clams. It may be legal, but let’s just say that the ethics of this practice are questionable at best. Then it sells elaborate reports telling companies exactly what ALL their competitors’ aircraft are doing at all times. It simply asks the FAA regularly for a list of all PIA addresses and who they belong to. One company, in particular, sends regular FOIA requests to the FAA in order to sell competitive data to other companies. All of this private data can be had with a simple letter sent to the FAA requesting it, and that’s exactly what people and companies do. It turns out that there’s one big loophole in the PIA program according to Plane and Pilot Magazine: the Freedom of Information Act. A downside of the PIA program is that you have to get a Flight ID at a cost of around £200/year. At the time of writing it wasn’t clear whether the CAA in the UK was adopting the same scheme and I couldn’t find anything on their website. To qualify, the aircraft must be U.S-registered, 1090-MHz ADS-B equipped, and fly in U.S. Those operators will receive an alternative, temporary ICAO aircraft address that is not linked with their FAA registration information. The Privacy ICAO Address (PIA) Program provides a portal to accept requests from operators seeking to keep their real-time ADS-B position and identification information private. The FAA has now put in place a plan to protect the privacy of operators from real-time flight-tracking services. This is also the problem with the Flight ID service offered by some use flight plan companies. Remember the registration number / ICAO hex code is a public lookup table. ![]() But this isn’t much use as they still squawk the ICAO code. In the US, transponders are “UAT” based and can have an anonymous switch whilst squawking 1200 (the equivalent of our 7000) which hides the tail number. We did wonder if there was a setting inside the transponder to anonymous the transmission other than “OFF”. The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), and members of the General Aviation (GA) community have cited the lack of privacy as a barrier to ADS-B Out adoption. Real-time tracking of the geographic location of a specific aircraft is possible, generating privacy concerns for the aircraft operator community. ![]() Perhaps other Helipaddy pilots have wondered about FlightRadar24, Automatic Dependent Surveillance and Broadcast (ADS-B), and all the other flight trackers? ( there are a dozen of them at the time of writing)ĪDS-B Out operates by transmitting the aircraft’s unique ICAO address, making identification by any individual with an ADS-B receiver possible. Flight data are clearly personalized and should be treated as such, following the rules of the GDPR. Crucially, before any data can be processed or stored, the customers (“data subjects”) have to give their consent. The law mandates companies to be more diligent in handling their customers’ personal data. The General Data Protection Regulation became active in 2018 in the whole European Union and the UK. It is only relevant for owners/operators. It’s not an issue for the charter market, because the passengers are not connected in any way to the aircraft registration. ![]() I wouldn’t really want to share with the public who I see and where I go in my car and, since I use the heli a bit like a car, I apply the same principle. This way, you don't have to know the name or code of the transparent color and you can make the PNG transparent by simply clicking on the color in the PNG. For example, if you click a green pixel, then all greenish pixels will be made transparent. Also, you can interactively click on the input PNG to instantly remove any color and its tones. By increasing the smoothness radius, you can remove more pixels from the edges and make PNG clearer. This option makes the pixels on the border between transparency and opacity semi-transparent. If you remove the color and the edges of the image still have a pixel or two of the old color, you can refine the edges and smooth them by enabling the "Smooth Edges" checkbox. For example, if the color that you're removing is red, then it will also remove cherry-red, rose-red, wine-red, and similar shades of red. Notably, I purchased the cheapest Harry Potter set (for the bespectacled Rivers Cuomo) and a large brick assortment set for the stage base and back. At that point, I only had some Star Wars LEGO sets, so I had to pick up some additional bricks and minifigures to create this model. In Fall 2001, I flew out to Seattle to visit friends and go to two shows– Tori Amos at the Paramount and Weezer at Key Arena.Īfter I returned home, I built this LEGO MOC (my own creation) of the Weezer stage. ![]() 2/15/2024 0 Comments Sound waves diffract![]() The audio would change as the listener’s moved around, allowing them to discover binaural sounds like hidden Icelandic volcanos and geysers. I worked with Bjork on a binaural installation at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. ![]() Understanding how the brain locates sound is important to create believable immersive sound. Play a binaural recording over headphones and you can hear the sounds surround you like in real life. This means the sound recorded has all the cues for location captured, including the effects of diffraction. One way to achieve this is to record sound in binaural using a dummy head with microphones in the ears. Recreating a sense of where sound comes from is vital for Virtual Reality. Our eyes face front, so it is really important that are ears are very good at hearing things and working our where the sound is coming from. The is very important for use to be able to track prey and to prevent us getting attacked. So we have two ears because it allows us to locate sound. The brain senses this difference in arrival time and frequency content, and uses it to locate sound. ![]() As we have seen, sounds with short wavelengths (high frequencies) don’t diffract as well, so the furthest ear hears fewer high frequencies. This means the sound wave arrives slightly later and is altered in terms of the balance of high and low frequencies it contains. Sound to the furthest ear has to diffract (bend) around the head. When sound comes from the side (directly, or via a reflection as shown in the picture), the sound at each ear is different. Your brain uses this information to locate the sound in front of you. This is because the head is more-or-less symmetrical and the sound to both ears travels an identical path. When sound reaches you from straight ahead, the same sound signal is received at both ears. If you close your eyes, you can tell which direction sound is coming from. (Sub-wavelength focusing in the near field, where different wave behavior dominates, has already been demonstrated.)īy showing that a simple Coke can array can focus sound waves beyond the diffraction limit, the study could have applications in providing energy for tiny electromechanical devices, among other uses.Diffraction also plays an important role in allowing us to locate sources of sound. "Without being too enthusiastic, I can say is the first experimental demonstration of far-field focusing of sound that beats the diffraction limit," Lerosey told Nature News. Such focus is significantly beyond the diffraction limit. That’s enough time to allow the evanescent-like waves to build up into a highly focused spot of just a few centimeters, or about 1/25th the space of the meter-long wavelength of the original acoustic wave. While the normal sound waves scatter and disappear quickly, the evanescent-like waves take longer - about a second - to scatter out of the can. The resulting sound waves amplify the sound above the can from which the original sound came from, and cancel out the sound everywhere else.Īs this single can continues to resonate, sound waves inside the can become scattered. Here, the researchers figured out a way to amplify and capture the evanescent-like waves coming from the soda cans using a method called “time reversal.” They recorded the sound above a single can with a microphone, and then played this sound backwards through the speakers. Previously, scientists have used acoustic metamaterial lenses to amplify the evanescent waves in order to make them easier to capture. However, evanescent waves only exist very close to an object’s surface because they fade very quickly, making them difficult to capture. If researchers can capture evanescent waves, they can beat the diffraction limit. ![]() The small waves are similar to evanescent waves, which can reveal details smaller than a wavelength and be used to focus sound. ![]() As a whole, the lens generated a variety of resonance patterns, some of which emanated from the can openings, which are much smaller than the wavelength of the sound waves. When they turned the speakers on to play a single tone, the sound waves traveled around and inside the cans, causing the cans to collectively oscillate like organ pipes. Then, the scientists surrounded the Coke can array with eight computer speakers. To build the acoustic lens, physicists Geoffroy Lerosey, Fabrice Lemoult, and Mathias Fink at the Langevin Institute of Waves and Images at the Graduate School of Industrial Physics and Chemistry in Paris (ESPCI ParisTech) assembled a 7x7 array of empty Coke cans with the tabs pulled off. ![]() |
